U.S.S. Marco Polo renamed U.S.S. Providence and enters active service under the command of Captain Robert P. Stuart. The ship is assigned to survey the Beta Tongarii Sector in the Beta Quadrant.

Starfleet Engineering Command authorizes an additional 16 Ericsson-class starships to be constructed over the next five years, bringing the total to 26 starships of this class.
